With
so many pubs these days selling only beers that are available nationally,
the LocAle campaign sets out to inform pub owners and consumers of the
benefits of drinking a local pint. A
lot of these national brews have no regional characteristics and identity;
all too often, they taste bland and inoffensive to appeal to as wide an
audience as possible. What’s
more, they can certainly notch up the ‘beer miles’ as they are
transported across the country. By
supporting the LocAle campaign, consumers and landlords can not only
support local and rural economies, but can also help to lower their carbon
footprint by reducing unnecessary transportation.
This also helps to lower the environmental impact of road
transportation, and reduce the number of lorries on the already congested
roads and motorways of Yorkshire. The
LocAle campaign looks not only to redress the balance and encourage
support for local breweries, but also to offer consumer choice and
incentives for landlords through publicity and sales. York
CAMRA is launching their campaign on Tuesday 19th February as part of
Community Pubs Week at Brigantes, Micklegate. The occasion will be marked
with a special beer brewed by Outlaw Brewery of Knaresborough. On
the same evening, Sheffield & District CAMRA will be launching their
campaign at the Ranmoor Inn on Fulwood Road in Ranmoor, Sheffield, with a
wide range of beers from local breweries available on the bar for all to
try. Yorkshire
is blessed with many craft and microbreweries some of which have a long
history. The Old Brewery at
Tadcaster, home to Samuel Smith’s, marks its 250th
anniversary in 2008 and Sheffield has its 1st on 16th
January. Others, such as the
Leeds brewery, have only been going for a few months. Beers
from these breweries aren’t always easy to find in their local area, so,
to encourage pubs to stock and promote them, York and Sheffield CAMRA
branches will offer publicity and accreditation to pubs which make a
commitment to sell at least one locally brewed real ale all the
time. The beer must
be a cask-conditioned real ale, as defined by CAMRA, and must come from a
brewery that ideally is no more than a specified distance from the pub.
York branch has chosen 25 miles, as it is a large, fairly rural
area, while Sheffield has gone for 20.
Different beers will qualify as LocAles depending on which part of
a branch area you are in. The
scheme is open to all pubs within the York and Sheffield branch areas,
which will be provided with an array of point of sale material such as
window stickers, posters and leaflets.
Pubs taking part in the scheme will also be publicised in the York
CAMRA quarterly publication Ouse Boozer and Sheffield’s monthly Beer
Matters. So,
what better reason to get out and support your local pub and breweries
and, who knows, you may find some local treasures! DOWNLOAD MORE INFORMATION: LocAle press pack (397kb) Information for drinkers (coming soon) Information for licencees (coming soon) Guide to local breweries (coming soon) List of LocAle accredited pubs (coming soon) |
