The Coach & Horses, Dronfield The Coach & Horses, on Sheffield Road in Dronfield, was built circa 1797, when an alternative turnpike road towards Sheffield via the Drone Valley was constructed. It was originally a coaching inn, with stables next to the pub where the car park is now.Previous owners included Wards, Tomlinsons and Scarsdale Breweries. It was bought by it’s current owners, Sheffield FC (the oldest football club in the world) in 2006, and refurbished to a high standard. Various factors come together to give the pub a cosy, comfortable and intimate atmosphere - the size of the room, the friendly staff, the decor and the sofas in the corner. Meals are served at lunchtime and in the evening - the food is of high quality and in demand - the pub is often fully booked for meals. Drinkers are well catered for too. The pub acts as the unofficial brewery tap for Thornbridge Brewery, with 5 handpumps dispensing their beers. Look out for the appearance of the occassional seasonal specials making an appearance on the bar. A very pleasant afternoon can be spent at the Coach & Horses curled up on a sofa with a pint of Jaipur IPA and a newspaper! The Coach & Horses also sees players, staff and supporters of Sheffield FC drinking in the pub when there is a home fixture, the pub must be the smartest football ground bar in the country, and fans will be pleased to find something a bit tastier than Carling to drink too! For the days the weather is warm - and for smokers - there is an outdoor seating area at the front of the pub, fenced in with a gate onto the road. For the last year the pub has been managed by Catherine, a very friendly and cheerful girl from New Zealand, whose partner ‘Kiwi’ is a brewer at Thornbridge Brewery, and along with her team ensure that the pub lives up to the promise on the banners outside of ‘Great Beer, Great times!’ The pub is five minutes from both Bowshaw roundabout and Dronfield town centre, and there is a bus stop outside the pub served by Stagecoach buses 43 and 44, also TM Travel buses 89 and 285. Alternatively it’s about a 15 minute walk to Lowedges Road where First bus 53 operates. We’ll be popping down to the Coach & Horses for an evening to present the well deserved Pub of the Month certificate to the team at the Coach & Horses on Tuesday 8th April, why not join us and enjoy a few quality pints with the staff and regulars to celebrate! |
