Exploring pubs by bus - route 52
A pub crawl by bus - route 52 Bus route 52, operated by both First and Yorkshire Terrier, runs from Crookes to Woodhouse via Broomhill, City Centre, Attercliffe and Handsworth. It operates very frequently and passes one or two decent pubs, so lends itself quite well to a bus based drinking expedition!

In the City Centre board the bus on High Street, buy a day ticket and travel to Crookes. We start by walking down the back streets to the Cobden View, on Cobden View Road, a great traditional, friendly local with three rooms, one with the bar, which offers a range of 4 beers, a lounge area and the games room with a pool table.

Next stop is the Noah’s Ark, a clean, friendly locals pub with a good beer range and good value food. From there we walk down to the Old Grindstone, a fairly large pub which despite being open plan does have a feel of having three distinct areas - 2 seating areas and a games room. It is popular with students from the nearby Tapton Halls of residence as well as locals.

We now rejoin the bus down to Broomhill. The centre of Broomhill is like a mini town centre with it’s range of shops and bars, and is usually lively, thanks mainly to the many University students in the area.

We alight the bus just across the road from the Place, which is the newest pub in Broomhill, which has a fairly smart, modern, even cosy feel to it.

It’s then on to the Fox & Duck, owned by the Students Union , but popular with locals as well, and offers an excellent range of ales.

Next it’s the Broomhill Tavern, a refurbished Tetleys pub, then finally it’s down to the Nottingham House, an ex-Firkin pub now owned by Punch Taverns which often features live music. It's also popular with 5-a-side football teams that play on the nearby all weather pitches.

We get back on the bus now, and to Attercliffe, where you will find the Carlton, which you could describe as a hidden gem - it has a small, unassuming frontage, so you could easily miss it. Inside however, you will find a comfy local pub with a warm welcome and an excellent range of beers. The Carlton won our March Pub of the Month award.

The next pub to visit is the Cocked Hat, which sits in the shadows of Don Valley Stadium, and offers a range of beers from Marstons.

Finally, to Handsworth, and the New Crown, home of the local Laurel & Hardy appreciation society. This is a good honest local boozer with a good atmosphere and a decent pint of ale!
