| Exploring pubs by bus - route 53 |
| First’s
route 53 runs from Bradway across the city to Ecclesfield, at frequent
intervals, taking in many good pubs along the way, including a number of
those in the Good Beer Guide.
So here is a pub crawl based on it! In the City Centre you board at Flat St and you can buy a ‘FirstDay’ pass from the driver. Catch the bus towards Ecclesfield as far as Penistone Road, for our first pub, the New Barrack Tavern, a multi-room pub owned by Castle Rock Brewery, where you can enjoy their beers plus guests. Then a short walk will take you to the Hillsborough Hotel, home of the Crown Brewery. This pub, which opens evenings only, has quite a modern style, and the bar features beers from Crown & Edale breweries, along with guest ales. Two of the three rooms are no-smoking. Return downhill to the bus stop for the short ride down Neepsend Lane for the Gardeners Rest, a friendly pub where you can enjoy most of the Timothy Taylors Beers as well as guests. It is also home to one of the few remaining bar billiards tables in Sheffield. A couple of stops further takes you to the Kelham Island area, where we start with the stylish Riverside Cafe Bar, which features a riverside terrace. If the weather is rubbish you may prefer to sit on one of the comfy chairs inside! From here we walk round onto Alma Street and visit the award winning Fat Cat. The pub is well known for it’s vegetarian food served at lunchtime, but even more famous for being the Kelham Island brewery tap. However there is also a massive range of guest beers from microbreweries across the land. Next we walk over the road to the Kelham Island Tavern on Russell Street. This pub won Yorkshire Pub of the Year last year. It has 2 rooms, the main room has the feel of a good local, and the bar features an excellent range of beers. The second room is new, and is no-smoking. The pub also has a very pleasant beer patio. Back onto the bus now and stay on beyond the City Centre to Heeley, for the Classic White Lion, then walk up to the Sheaf View, a formerly derelict pub now brought back to life and serving a large range of ales from small breweries. From here catch a bus to Woodseats, where we visit the Woodseats Palace, A Wetherspoons house. Before rejoining the bus you may wish to enjoy a good pint of Tetleys Bitter in either the Chantry or the Abbey. Also on Woodseats, the Woodseats Hotel serves Tetley Bitter, Marstons Pedigree and Bass, and often has live entertainment. We now head to Bradway. Note that the 53 only goes to Bradway after 7pm, so if you are drinking in the daytime you should use the 25A from Woodseats to Bradway terminus. On your return Stagecoach bus M17 links all Bradway’s pubs with Lowedges, the 53’s daytime terminus. Anyway, located at Bradway bus terminus is the Old Mother Redcap, a modern local built in the style of a farmhouse, this is a Samuel Smith’s pub serving Old Brewery Bitter at a very reasonable price. Finally, we walk to the Castle Inn, which has a range of around 5 popular beers. It is built into the end of a row of cottages which were built around the same time as the Bradway railway tunnel, and has 3 rooms - tap room, lounge and a restaurant. If you are doing this crawl in the evening, you will need to walk up the hill to Bradway Road to rejoin the bus route. There is another pub by the bus stop, the Bradway Hotel, a comfy pub that serves a reasonable pint of Marston’s Pedigree. Bus information - call 01709 515151 or visit www.sypte.co.uk. |
