is not only blessed with some fine real ale hostelries but also with
some of the finest Folk musicians in the country. The City is home to
some regular sessions featuring music of all varieties. Here is a guide
to some of the pubs where you can listen, imbibe and sometimes even join
in.
The Dog & Partridge on Trippet Lane has an evening folk session every day, plus a lunchtime session too at the weekend. To drink there is a choice of Tetley Bitter or a beer from Abbeydale Brewery. Fagans is another pub with regular folk sessions, these are held every evening except Thursday, plus Sunday lunch. On the bar it’s a choice of Tetley Bitter and Abbeydale Moonshine. The Hillsborough Hotel on Langsett Road has folk every Sunday - 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month see JimMcDonald & Dave Young perform, 2nd Sunday it’s Richard Arrowsmith and Friends and the 4th Sunday the musician varies. Also on Sundays the Kelham Island Tavern plays host to live music, withVal Huzzard and friends playing on the first Sunday of the month, accoustic sessions on the second and fourth Sunday and the third Sunday sees a song session. In addition, the Kelham has an old time music session on the third Monday of the month. A massive range of interesting, good quality beers can be found here, all from micro-breweries. On Tuesday evenings Chris Mcmahon and Sue Cain can be found entertaining the crowds at the Frog & Parrot on Division Street, where beers from Greene King and guests can be enjoyed. Jim Mcdonald and Dave Young at the Hillsborough perform at the New Barrack Tavern on Penistone Road on the first Monday of the month, where beers from Castle Rock and guest beers can be enjoyed. On a Wednesday the Freemasons at Hillsborough has folk music with Jim McDonald, Josie Wexler and Brian Howard and to drink a choice of Tetley Bitter or Greene King Old Speckled Hen. Also on Wednesdays, the Red Deer on Pitt Street hosts the University of Sheffield Celidh Society. A range of around 5 real ales is available.
