City Centre walkabout report - the West Street alternative
The January walkabout took in some great pubs just off the main West Street drag, and started in the Three Tuns. This is more like a comfortable local than a city centre boozer, and is an interesting triangle shape thanks to the layout of the roads outside. The manager of the Three Tuns is very proud of the quality of his beer, and was very keen to point out the fact he has got Cask Marque accreditation.

Next was the Wig & Pen, a fairly smart bar with a relaxed atmosphere and beers from Abbeydale Brewery. Given the market they are aiming at, the beer prices seemed quite reasonable.

Third stop was the Dog & Partridge, which was rather busy. Despite this we got served quite quickly from the choice of Tetley Bitter or Abbeydale Brimstone, and we soon enjoyed the atmosphere. The landlady is Irish, and the character of the pub reflects this, with a very friendly crowd and musicians playing in the back room.

Finally the Grapes. The design of this pub is still quite old fashioned with several rooms around a main corridor, but is best known for it’s place on the local music scene, with bands playing in the upstairs room on many nights. We simply stayed in the bar area and enjoyed a last pint, which is a choice of two Abbeydale Beers or Tetley Bitter.
