A pub crawl by bus - route 293
OK, route 293 I admit is not one of the more well known services in Sheffield, and neither does it go past any of the more famous real ale pubs in Sheffield.

However, stay with me, there are still some nice pubs along the way, and you will get to drink in nice areas of the city that you may never have been to!

The 293 runs hourly from Sheffield to Dronfield and is operated by TM Travel (www.tmtravel.co.uk). In the City Centre it can be boarded on Arundel Gate or Moorfoot.

Our first stop is only 5 minutes out of town on London Road, it is the Cremorne, a simple Tetleys boozer with a decent choice of guest ales.

Next stop is on Abbeydale Road, it is the Broadfield, a two roomed pub, one is a spacious games room with seating featuring pool and table football, and the other is divided into different areas. Football is shown on the big screen and cheap food is available. It is popular with students and ex-students.

Back on the bus for a slightly longer run this time, to Greenhill, where we alight at the shops and walk up the hill into Greenhill village, where you will find the White Swan, on Greenhill Main Road. This has the feel of a country pub with it’s oak panelling and wooden beams. There is four distinct drinking areas in the pub, served by a central bar, nice food is served, and if the weather is good there is outdoor seating too. There is sometimes entertainment in the front lounge at the weekend in the form of a pianist or singer. A choice of 3 real ales can be found here - 2 regulars and a guest.

If you fancy fish and chips for lunch rather than a pub meal this is your opportunity - Greenhill village fisheries is just round the corner!

Rejoining the bus, we stay on to Dronfield Woodhouse, where the bus will drop you off outside the Jolly Farmer. This pub was built as an estate pub at the same time as the surrounding housing, then later converted to the ‘alehouse’ theme - many of the casks are stillaged behind a glass panel to the rear of the bar! As well as 3 regular beers, there are up to 3 guest beers, you are spoilt for choice!

On the way back to Sheffield, you may wish to hop off the bus on Archer Road and stock up at the Archer Road Beer Stop off licence, which is listed in the Good Beer Guide!
